We came across the term “unconscious connection” recently and it really captures what we do here at The Garbageman's Guide.

Think about your closet. You can see if it’s full of clothes that have no more value to you. That kind of clutter is tangible. You can literally hold it in your hands.

Now look inside your mind. What you’ll find in there is a collection of thoughts, beliefs, and opinions, or TBOs, that you’ve been collecting your entire life. Here’s the truth: just like that closet, there’s stuff in your head that you don’t need anymore. And carrying around that junk has a cost.

You see, every decision and every action you take is based on the collective experience you've had. A relationship didn’t work out. You didn’t like the salmon you ordered. A friend lied to you. Each time you have an experience, your mind makes up a TBO about it and files it away. It makes an unconscious connection between the TBO and the experience. When a similar situation presents itself, your mind draws on that connection and you take action.

Here's the problem. If you don't shine a light on some of those unconscious connections, you'll keep doing the same thing over and over again—and that could be holding you back. You won’t trust people. You expect to be burned in love. You never try salmon again.

Now, think of a time where you said or did something out of character; something that made you say, “I don't know what got into me!” It can be bad (losing your temper) or good (raising your hand and volunteering for a project). Those are the moments where you broke the unconscious connection. You tossed the old garbage that said, “Act this way” and you went off in a different direction. The second you did that, a world of infinite possibilities opened up for you. That’s when life starts to change.

If you want push that change into the fast lane, remember this one simple word: ACT.

Aware. Ask why you do the things you do. Notice the TBOs floating through your head. Pay a little more attention to what you’re thinking.

Choose. The moment you become aware of what you’re doing, you have the power to choose not to do it anymore.

Toss. Toss the trash by saying, “I’m not doing the same old thing anymore” and try something different.

ACT lets you shine a light on the unconscious connections you have between the TBOs stored in your mind and the actions you take. The moment that connection becomes conscious, you’re in the driver’s seat.

Who wants to put up with a head full of garbage? By understand the unconscious connections in your mind, you won’t have to anymore.
